A man was injured in an encounter with a bear along a popular trail in Glacier National Park.
The 35-year-old was on the Highline Trail near the Grinnell Glacier Overlook trailhead on September 19, 2024, when his hiking party encountered the bear, said the NPS. The man sustained non-life threatening injuries and walked more than a mile to Granite Park Chalet with help from park rangers and other hikers. He was then flown to a hospital for treatment.
It’s not clear what kind of bear was involved. The Montana park has both black and grizzly bears.
A section of the Highline Trail from Haystack Butte to Granite Park Chalet is closed until further notice. The Highline Trail is a well-known hike that starts at Logan Pass along Going-to-the-Sun Road.
