The Grand Tetons’ name has a somewhat sultry origin.

DENALI NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE – Did you know? At a height of 20,310 feet, Denali is the tallest mountain in North America and at the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve.

The National Park Service says the mountain was first dubbed “Mt. McKinley” in an 1897 article written by a gold prospector. The name was a tribute to then President-elect William McKinley. McKinley had no direct connection to the park but the name took hold after he was assassinated in 1901.

In 2015, the mountain was officially named “Denali” under the Obama administration to acknowledge the historic and cultural significance of the name and the mountain. Denali means the “high one” or “tall one” in one Native Alaskan language and dates back countless generations.
