The Grand Tetons’ name has a somewhat sultry origin.

GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK – There’s a major team effort – pairing hunters alongside wildlife biologists – to protect and manage bighorn sheep populations in Wyoming. 

The initiative is shared in the new documentary “Carrying Capacity,” which is now posted on the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s YouTube page.

Scientists, wildlife experts, and hunters, talk about their efforts to save this iconic species amid mounting threats, including disease outbreaks. The Jackson herd is profiled in the documentary and has lived in the Grand Teton National Park region since the last ice age. 

Ram horns can weigh up to 40 pounds. Their skulls have two layers of bone above the brain, acting as a shock absorber when they slam into each other to establish dominance, especially during mating season, according to the National Park Service.
