New Island Identified in Alaska National Park

Must Read

This is the Smallest National Park in the United States

At just 91 acres, this park is an urban oasis for people and animals passing through, including coyotes, opossums, peregrine falcons and more.

GLACIER BAY NATIONAL PARK – A new island has appeared in Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park.

The Alsek Glacier has thinned and retreated so dramatically that a once ice-bound mountain, Prow Knob, is now surrounded by open water, according to NASA. In summer 2025, the glacier lost contact with the landmass, transforming it into a new two-square-mile island in Alsek Lake.

Scientists say this rapid melt is driven by climate change. Since 1984, Alsek Lake has expanded from 17 to 29 square miles, while nearby glacial lakes have more than doubled in size.
