MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – Mammoth Cave National Park celebrated the holiday season with its annual Cave Sing over the weekend. More than 700 people made the trek into the cave for the unique holiday festivities, complete with a decorated Christmas tree and a choir singing carols in the candlelight.
The very first Cave Sing at Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave National Park took place back in 1883 when a group of residents brought a 10-foot tree decorated with ribbons and popcorn into the cave. Too sentimental to discard, the tree remained long after Christmas and dried up. Many decades later, a stray flame caught the old tree and it burned in place, becoming the cave’s only wildfire in history.
The modern version of the Cave Sing picked up again in 1980 and has continued ever since.
