Trail Cameras Capture Rare Jaguar in Arizona Mountains

These Presidents Established the Most National Monuments

Fun fact: National Park Service units are designated through either congressional action or by presidential declaration.

What a sight! This elusive jaguar was spotted in a series of trail camera images in a mountain range in Arizona near the U.S.-Mexico border. There have been five documented sightings this summer of the same male jaguar.

“We’re really excited that it’s on the landscape again, because it speaks volumes about the biodiversity of the ecosystem,” said Susan Malusa, a biogeographer and co-coordinator for the University of Arizona’s Wild Cat Research and Conservation Center. “It’s good news to see that an ecosystem is healthy for tiny little herbivores up to these apex predators.”

Jaguars remain extremely rare in the United States, with just eight having been photographed since 1996. They are considered an endangered species.
