DEVILS TOWER NATIONAL MONUMENT – Fun fact: National Park Service units are designated through either congressional action or by presidential declaration. The president can protect land using the Antiquities Act of 1906. Their executive actions account for about 1/4 of the current sites within the National Park System.

President Barack Obama declared the most national monuments of any president with 29 sites to his name. President Bill Clinton is second with 19, and President Theodore Roosevelt is third with 18, according to the National Parks Conservation Association. Some of these lands are now managed by other federal agencies, including NOAA, BLM and the Forest Service.

There are 429 national park units in the United States under the management of the National Park Service, but not all units are national parks.
