Fun fact: The Jackson Hole Airport in Grand Teton National Park is the only commercial airport located entirely inside a national park!
The airport started commercial operations in 1946 and is the busiest in Wyoming. Passenger planes fly in from Seattle, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, and more. Airlines have to make special noise accommodations, too, to protect animals and the ecosystem.
“In recognition of the airport’s unique location within Grand Teton National Park…noise limitations are more stringent than those required at any other commercial airport in the United States,” the Jackson Hole Airport website states.
Here are a few other noteworthy airports affiliated with parks:
↟ The National Park Service owns McKinley National Park Airport just outside of Denali National Park and Preserve.
↟ Everglades Airpark, a publicly owned airport, is bordered on three sides by Everglades National Park in Florida.
↟ Grand Canyon National Park Airport is just two miles outside the Arizona park. It’s the only state-owned airport in Arizona.
