ZION NATIONAL PARK – Please don’t scratch the rocks at Zion! Rangers and volunteers have spent countless hours removing ugly marks from the beautiful geologic features within the iconic Utah national park.
There were multiple X marks discovered along a single trail recently, and in another instance, a smiley face. Even though marks can sometimes be erased, the removal process can cause erosion and degradation. Rock scratches aren’t the only blight on the landscape.
“This unnecessary vandalism ranges from rock scratches to stickers, permanent markers, chalk, and even spray paint,” said the NPS. “Graffiti is damaging to natural resources and often a site that is damaged will not be able to be restored to its original condition.”
Remember to leave no trace when you visit the national parks.
