ZION NATIONAL PARK – A trail crew safely took down a sandstone boulder looming over the infamously treacherous Angels Landing Trail last month. First reported by a hiker, the precariously perched rock was secured in a net until crews were ready to roll. Once released, gravity did the rest—sending the boulder tumbling into Refrigerator Canyon and breaking apart on impact.
Thanks to the crew’s quick work, the trail was only closed for 45 minutes before hikers were welcomed back.
“Shout out to our Trails Crew for their quick work!” said the National Park Service on Instagram. “You guys ‘rock!’”
Zion’s dramatic cliffs and canyons are carved from Navajo Sandstone, a rock shaped by ancient desert dunes. Just like the landscape itself, it is still changing today.
