YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK – An eruption was caught on camera at one of Yellowstone National Park’s famous hydrothermal features. It happened at Black Diamond Pool in Biscuit Basin on May 31, 2025 and was captured on video by a brand new webcam installed on May 14. The event was described as a “small eruption” by the experts at the USGS. (note, there is no audio of the eruption on the original clip)
Black Diamond Pool is the same location that experienced a powerful hydrothermal explosion in July of 2024 that shot steam, rocks and debris hundreds of feet into the air and destroyed a boardwalk. That eruption was caused by water abruptly turning into steam in the shallow hydrothermal system beneath Black Diamond Pool. The event was not caused by volcanic activity. The Biscuit Basin area is still off limits to visitors.
