ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK – A wolf that was introduced into Colorado earlier this year has been found dead in Rocky Mountain National Park, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
Federal wildlife experts will investigate how the female wolf died because the animals are protected under the Endangered Species Act. They learned of the death after receiving a “mortality alert from the wolf’s collar.
The wolf was one of 15 released in January as part of the state’s voter-approved wolf reintroduction program. The wolves were translocated from British Columbia.
The wolf reintroduction program has been controversial among ranchers who say the wolves are a threat to their livestock and livelihood, while supporters of the program point out that wolves are a part of a healthy Colorado ecosystem.
