The national park in a remote region of Minnesota is named after the travelers who explored the wild waterways of the area.

INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL PARK – A time capsule in a sealed copper box has been discovered at Indiana Dunes National Park.

Contractors found the box in the historic Good Fellow Lodge during a restoration project. Inside, they discovered a silk 48-star American Flag and several documents, including a property deed, a speech card and newspaper articles. The time capsule was tucked away on January 18, 1941, during a final stone-laying ceremony.

“We had no idea that this even existed, so we were just completely flabbergasted and excited that this was found,” Todd Ravesloot, Chief of Facilities for Indiana Dunes, told NBC Chicago.

U.S. Steel originally constructed the lodge to provide a place for its employees’ children to attend summer camp. The Illinois Steel Company Welfare Association also put a memo inside the capsule, dedicating the site to future generations.

The items found inside will be preserved and eventually put on public display. Meanwhile, construction on the building is set to finish next fall.
