Later in the season, something magical happens.

HUMBOLDT-TOIYABE NATIONAL FOREST – California is helping critters cross the road. To protect the threatened Yosemite Toad from cars, the California Department of Transportation and USGS installed toad crossings in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.

The crossings allow vehicles to drive above safely, while the toads continue on their merry way below. Low fences were also installed along the side of the road to help guide the toads to the safer crossing.

The project was completed in 2020, and this month, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced it’s a success. Even other little animals, like the Pika, have benefited from the new bridge.
