MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK – Thousands of people turned out at national parks and NPS sites across the country over the weekend to protest mass firings at the National Park Service, which were ordered by the Trump administration.
Protesters lined roads and held signs up, declaring their support for their beloved national parks and the dedicated employees who take care of iconic, historic and culturally important locations.
The Trump administration slashed 1,000 permanent NPS jobs, impacting many workers who had just started their careers. The move has triggered significant public backlash, despite the White House reversing course on its initial decision to also slash seasonal jobs. Now, 7,700 additional temporary workers will be allowed for the upcoming busy summer travel season, but it is little solace to those NPS workers who lost their livelihoods.
The U.S. Forest Service was also ordered to cut about 2,000 jobs.
