World’s Oldest Wild Bird, 74, Lays Another Egg

Must Read

This is the Smallest National Park in the United States

At just 91 acres, this park is an urban oasis for people and animals passing through, including coyotes, opossums, peregrine falcons and more.

The world’s oldest known wild bird has laid another egg!

Wisdom, the Laysan albatross (mōlī in Hawaiian), is at least 74 years old. She laid an egg at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge at the northwestern edge of the Hawaiian Archipelago in late November. This is her first egg in four years, but wildlife experts think she is still showing the energy and instincts to raise another chick.

Wisdom had a partner for decades named Akeakamai, but that bird has not been seen for several years, so Wisdom picked up a new mate. She is estimated to have produced as many as 30 chicks in her lifetime. Wisdom was first banded in 1956.
