Heavily Traveled Trail to Undergo Safety Overhaul

Don’t Get Too Close: There’s a Giant Rift in Canyonlands That’s 65 ft. Deep

This abyss is at least 65 feet deep and 3 feet across at points.

Yosemite’s iconic Mist Trail corridor—which takes visitors from the valley floor all the way to the top of Half Dome—needs an overhaul to address visitor safety, lost hikers, and visitors services.

Each summer, 85,000 visitors use the trail, but they’re not all properly equipped or educated about what to expect on the rugged route.

“Some visitors do not recognize the danger of navigating steep trails, swift water, and the cables on Half Dome, resulting in injuries, fatalities, and dangerous rescue and recovery operations,” said the National Park Service.

The NPS is also considering:

↟ Additional wayfinding/orientation at the Happy Isles trailhead
↟ Improved infrastructure to handle big crowds
↟ More education along the trail to teach visitors about the “unique natural and cultural resources” along the corridor

The deadline to comment is coming up soon — Nov. 23, 2024. Go to the Yosemite National Park website to share your ideas and insight.
