The 2nd National Park in the U.S. Eventually Lost That Title

Michigan’s Mackinac Island was the country’s 2nd ever national park, created in 1875, just three years after Yellowstone National Park.

ARCHES NATIONAL PARK – The family of a woman who was decapitated by a traffic gate at Utah’s Arches National Park is being granted a $10.5 million settlement. Esther Nakajjigo, 25, was visiting the park with her husband in 2020 when a gust of wind swung a metal gate into the newlywed’s vehicle as they exited a parking lot.

The family says the situation could have been prevented if the park had installed the gate correctly or put a lock on it. The woman’s husband was uninjured, but court documents point out the extreme emotional distress he experienced as a result of the horrific tragedy.
