Illegal Parking Plagues Crowded Trailheads

The Home of Greek Gods Inspired Park’s Name

Olympic National Park in Washington State gets its name from the famous Mount Olympus in Greece.

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK – Illegal parking has become a big problem at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Trailheads to the most popular hikes like Laurel Falls, pictured, are becoming a hazard. Now boulders, fencing, and wooden bollards are being installed to block people from parking along the roads.

“It’s critical that we protect iconic park destinations from the unintended consequences associated with too many people trying to squeeze into the same places at the same time on the same days,” said Superintendent Cassius Cash.

Other affected areas include: Gatlinburg, Alum Cave, and Chimney Tops trailheads, Big Creek and Deep Creek picnic areas, and Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail.

Parking problems are plaguing many national parks. Recent years have seen a surge in the number of visitors to these treasured places. Zion converted to a shuttle system, but parking can still be tough to find. Arches has a timed entry system to limit the number of visitors at peak times. Glacier has a vehicle reservation system for certain portions of the park. Only time – and your feedback – will tell which solutions work best.
