YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK – A beloved 400-year-old tree has fallen in Yosemite National Park, a sad moment marking the end of the living landmark’s days standing tall and proud above the Merced River by the Sugar Pine Bridge, which was named after the historic tree. But it also marks the beginning of new life in the valley.
The tree fell across the river, slowing its flow and pushing the water higher onto the adjacent floodplain, nourishing other plants in the area. The tree will also provide shelter and habitat for the native fish and insects. In fact, experts often emulate this kind of event in restoration projects to support river health.
