YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK – It’s bear capturing season in Yellowstone National Park!
The park is alerting visitors that they’re conducting scientific field capture operations from September 1 to October 15, 2025. That means some areas are off limits, and park officials warn it’s critical that people heed the posted signs for their own safety.
“To attract bears, biologists use natural food sources such as recently road-killed deer and elk,” said the National Park Service. “Potential capture sites are baited with these natural foods and if indications are that grizzly bears are in the area, culvert traps or foot snares are used to capture bears.”
This is the 50th year that the national park has partnered with the USGS, state, and tribal entities to radio collar grizzlies through the Inter Agency Grizzly Bear Study Team. The data from this decades-long research provides vital information about how grizzlies move, reproduce, behave, and adapt across the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
More than 830 bears have been radio collared since 1975, typically for 2 to 3 years.
