KATMAI NATIONAL PARK – The world famous Katmai bears are starting to come back after their long winter slumber. The first bear was spotted at Brooks Camp this week.
They’re on the lookout for anything they can get their paws on: last year’s salmon carcasses, leftover berries, or grasses. The brown bears spent the last 4-6 months sleeping through the bitter Alaska winter.
Katmai National Park and Preserve is renowned for its extraordinary density of brown bears, which are attracted to Brooks Falls every year when the salmon run begins, typically in late June. Katmai is home to a captivating livestream of bears fishing and the global phenomenon called “Fat Bear Week,” in which the fattest bear is declared after the yearly salmon feast.
