The 2nd National Park in the U.S. Eventually Lost That Title

Michigan’s Mackinac Island was the country’s 2nd ever national park, created in 1875, just three years after Yellowstone National Park.

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK – The magical firefall season is getting underway in Yosemite National Park!

The spectacle is caused when the sun sets behind Horsetail Fall near El Capitan, aligning in such a way that the water appears to be on fire. The conditions have to be just right though because clouds or haze can diminish the effect.

Seeing the firefall has surged in popularity in recent years, so much so that the crowds have caused damage to fragile meadows and stream banks. Now, the California national park has put restrictions in place from February 8-23 (for 2025) to manage thei event.

A reservation is required for anyone who wants to drive in to Yosemite on the weekends, Feb. 8-9, 15-17, and 22-23. However, visitors who arrive and pay the entrance fee Mondays through Fridays (except Monday, February 17) won’t need a reservation.

Parking restrictions will also be in effect in some area.

If you’re planning to make the trip, make sure to bring warm clothes and a headlamp or flashlight. Stay on trails and out of meadows or other fenced areas. For reservation details, click here.
