Michigan’s Mackinac Island was the country’s 2nd ever national park, created in 1875, just three years after Yellowstone National Park.

The Northern lights put on a show at national parks across the country! The extraordinary celestial phenomenon stretched farther south than usual, all the way down to Big Bend National Park in Texas, thanks to a series of extremely strong solar storms that blasted into Earth. Solar activity fluctuates on an 11-year cycle and astronomers say we’re currently near the peak of that cycle, which is called a solar maximum.
