Man Dies while Attempting Illegal BASE Jump into Grand Canyon

Must Read

A man died after trying to BASE jump into the Grand Canyon, according to the National Park Service.

The man leapt from Yavapai Point along the South Rim and fell 500 feet at about 7:30 a.m. on August 1, the NPS said. His parachute reportedly deployed, but it’s unclear what exactly went wrong.

BASE jumping, which is leaping off cliffs, buildings, or other structures before deploying a chute, is extremely dangerous and is banned everywhere inside the Arizona park.

The man’s body was recovered but he has not yet been identified officially. An NPS investigation is underway.
