JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK – An odd-looking hut has been installed at California’s Joshua Tree National Park to provide valuable shade in the desert landscape. The design inspiration? It’s the skeleton of a cholla cactus.
Architect Douglas Noble told The Desert Sun, “We wanted to design a building that looked like it belonged to Joshua Tree National Park. If the Carapace Pavilion was found in another national park, somebody would look at it and go, ‘Oh, that building got away, let’s send it back to Joshua Tree.'”
The new shade spot, called Carapace Pavilion, is located off an unmarked dirt road near Sheep Pass at a volunteer campground that’s not officially open to the public. It’s expected to last at least 100 years with no maintenance required.
