CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARK – To honor the start of Black History Month, we celebrate explorer J.R. Harris. The 78-year-old has traveled the world, visiting 50 countries, every continent except Antarctica and many, many national parks.
“I have faced terrible weather, hair-raising river crossings and wildlife encounters, but I’ve also beheld the awesome majesty and pristine beauty of our incredible planet,” said Harris. The New York City resident says he’s never felt lonely while alone in the wilderness, despite many of his backpacking treks taking weeks.
And if you’re wondering, yes, he’s still going on adventures! In 2022, he visited Swedish Lapland. The year prior, he went to Shenandoah National Park and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
