CAMP HALE-CONTINENTAL DIVIDE NATIONAL MONUMENT – A brand new National Monument has been dedicated in Colorado! Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument is 53,800 acres smack dab in the heart of ski country.
The high valley is where soldiers trained in mountain combat for WWII. The monument has a significant outdoor recreation legacy. Many of the soldiers who trained there fell in love with the alpine lifestyle. One founded the National Outdoor Leadership School. Another became the 1st Executive Director of the Sierra Club. In total, soldiers with ties to Camp Hale went on to create 60 ski areas!
Development is banned in the area. But skiing, snowmobiling, hiking and camping is permitted. It’s located in the White River National Forest which sees more than 10 million visitors each year, more than any other national forest in the US.
