BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK – Listen as a burrowing owl hisses like a rattlesnake. It’s believed to be a defense mechanism for these ground-dwelling raptors, which take up residence inside vacant rodent burrows.
Aside from this unique call, burrowing owls are also famous for their silly long legs. They spend much of their time on the ground and are active during the day, which is different from your typical owl behavior.
They live over a vast range, including Badlands National Park, the grasslands of the midwest, the southwest, California, Texas, and Florida.
