Fun fact: Brown bears and grizzly bears may seem the same, but they’re not. While they are the same species, we call them either a grizzly or a brown bear depending on their geography.
Brown bears tend to live in coastal regions while grizzlies are farther inland. They are also much larger than grizzlies.
“Large male brown bears in Katmai can routinely weigh over 1000 pounds (454 kg) in the fall…There have been no documented cases of grizzly bears weighing over 900 pounds (408 kg) in Yellowstone,” according to the National Park Service.
They seem to have some personality differences, too. Experts say grizzlies tend to be less tolerant of the presence of other bears while brown bears don’t seem to mind it so much, as evidenced by the large number of brown bears that gather at Brooks Falls in Alaska’s Katmai National Park & Preserve
