GLACIER NATIONAL PARK – Bison thrived in Glacier National Park’s steep mountainous terrain as recently as the late 19th century, according to new research that aligns with traditional knowledge of the Blackfeet Nation.
Bones, teeth and other evidence have been found, indicating that bison lived throughout the alpine mountains of the Montana national park, including the Continental Divide at nearly 8,000 feet above sea level. In fact, they spent much of their lives in the area despite the common belief that bison are mainly creatures of the Great Plains.
The giant mammals were part of the region’s ecosystem for millennia and the people of the Blackfeet Nation relied on them for survival. The Blackfeet are currently working to bring bison back to Glacier and the tribe has the park’s support.
