Most people fly or drive to national parks. But maybe it’s time to retrain our brains to think — trains! They’re a great way to sit back and relax while soaking in some of the country’s national treasures. Here are a couple options for you to consider:
Grand Canyon National Park via the “Grand Canyon Railway” (full route: Williams, Arizona to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon)
Cuyahoga Valley National Park via the “Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad” (full route: Akron, OH through the full valley and eventually reaching Independence, OH)
Sagauro and Big Bend National Parks via “The Sunset Limited” train (full route: New Orleans to LA)
Indiana Dunes National Park via the “Michigan Services” train (full route: Chicago to Pontiac, MI)
Yosemite, King’s Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, access via the “San Joaquins” train (full route: Oakland/Sacramento to Bakersfield). *Note that bus connections are needed!
Arches and Canyonland National Parks via the “California Zephyr” train (full route: Chicago to Emerson, CA)
There are also three National Park Service sites dedicated to sharing the history of trains in America:
Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site
Golden Spike National Historic Site
Steamtown National Historic Site
