SOUTHERN UTAH – Three beavers were successfully relocated in southern Utah. The experts at the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources say the aquatic mammals will help stabilize streams in their new habitat. Plus, apparently these cute critters had become a “nuisance” in their hometown and needed to be removed.
One commenter on Instagram voiced what we are all thinking by saying “How can I get some beavers released to my property?”
Interestingly, Utah has its own “Beaver Ecology and Relocation Collaborative.” The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources partners with Utah State University to remove nuisance beavers from properties where the animals are damaging trees, irrigation systems, or roadways. They’ll trap the animals (for free, but donations encouraged) and then release the beavers into areas where their innate ecosystem engineering skills can actually improve the environment, by helping to naturally filter waterways and by creating more fire and drought resistant landscapes.
