The person who pulled down a historic Saline Valley Salt Tram tower in Death Valley National Park has come forward, claiming full responsibility for their actions.

The person contacted the National Park Service’s tip line to claim responsibility after an “overwhelming response” on social media, “stating that this was done during a time of desperation while being deeply stuck in mud, and that it wasn’t their intent to cause harm to the historic structure,” according to the NPS.

“We are grateful to the dozens of people who reached out to the park with information and for all the statements of support that we received from people who care about this place and its cultural resources,” said acting Superintendent Elizabeth Ibañez. “Although we would certainly prefer that this damage hadn’t happened, we are glad that the person who did this ultimately took responsibility for their actions and came forward.”

The salt tram tower is 113 years old. An assessment of the damage is underway, including a possible restoration plan. That process will take time, and well-meaning individuals are being urged not to try to make repairs on their own because it could cause additional damage without the proper tools or training.

No additional information is being shared about the individual who pulled down the tower in the California park.
