DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK – Lake Manly has reappeared after a record-breaking amount of rainfall in November in Death Valley National Park. The lake is located in Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America, 282 feet below sea level. To get to the lake, it’s a one mile hike from the Badwater parking lot.

November brought 1.76 inches of rain to the California park, the most since 1923, according to the National Park Service. The lake also reappeared in 2023 after the remnants of Hurricane Hilary hit, and the fleeting body of water stuck around for several months.

Interestingly, Lake Manly was 80 miles long and 600 feet deep during the last Ice Age. Now, it’s an ephemeral lake that occasionally appears in one of the hottest and driest spots in the world when the conditions are just right.
