GLACIER NATIONAL PARK – Three visitors had a brush with death at Glacier National Park after falling into a gorge while posing for a photo, according to the National Park Service.
They were part of a group of four people from Florida taking a picture on the rocks above Avalanche Gorge at about 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2025. That’s when one person fell into the water. Two others fell in while trying to help. Two were swept all the way down the gorge, and bystanders performed CPR on them, successfully resuscitating them.
Meanwhile, the other individual was able to grab onto tree branches in the gorge. A park ranger rappelled to him and secured him until a technical rescue team retrieved both the individual and the ranger.
All three were taken to Logan Health hospital in Kalispell, Montana. One was flown in an ambulance helicopter called A.L.E.R.T. The two others were taken by ambulance. They are all reported to be in stable condition.
“The park would like to thank the park visitors for their heroic efforts that saved two lives, Three Rivers Ambulance, ALERT and the Whitefish Fire Department,” said the NPS.
Drowning is the leading cause of death in Glacier National Park, according to the NPS. Visitors are urged to never walk, play, or climb on rocks and logs, especially around waterfalls.
