BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK – Torrential rains have caused flooding, evacuations, and closures in Big Bend National Park. This is part of the severe weather system that has hammered portions of Texas in recent days, leaving tragedy in its wake, including more than 20 children who were swept away by flash floods while taking part in an all-girls camp hundreds of miles east of Big Bend.

Campers were evacuated from Rio Grande Village campground as floodwaters reached the low-lying area. The National Park Service says it is taking action to protect historic structures like the Alvino House. The Hot Springs Historic District is flooded and has been shut down. So has the Boquillas Port of Entry. Unpaved roads are impassable, according to the NPS.

More rain is in the forecast, with the possibility of more flooding.
