WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK – In the ongoing fight against chronic wasting disease, Wind Cave National Park will kill about 40 elk. Backcountry areas of the South Dakota park will be off-limits to hikers until February 17 all day, every day, except on the weekends.

The National Park Service says the Rocky Mountain Elk that are killed will be tested for the disease. Meat from the animals that test negative will be donated to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
